There was a time in my life when money was super tight
I was working full-time and really wanted to stay home with my kids, so I made a list of ways we could save money. The list included everything from refinancing our house to putting a brick in our toilet tank to save on our water bill.
On that list was “Make My Own Cleaning Products”
I knew baking soda and vinegar were cheaper than the fancy sprays and cleaners at the store. While it took me a few years to be able to stay home with my kids, I started making my own cleaning products almost a decade ago.
This was a Journey
I didn’t just throw out all my cleaning products and start making my own. Instead, I would run out of disinfecting wipes and then figure out a homemade version… Run out of laundry detergent… make my own. Heck, I’m still switching things out.
Something Happened While Cleaning our Kids’ Bathroom
A few months into this journey I was spraying a cleaner on the bathroom vanity and found myself practically choking on the fumes. I had to leave the room it was so bad. At that moment, I realized that not only could homemade cleaners save me money, but they were so much healthier for my family. Instead of vague ingredients like “fragrance”, “surfactants”, and “dye”, I would know exactly what was in everything I used around my house.
Years In, I Started Making My Own Personal Care Items
I began to make my own hand soap and lip balm and body butter. Many of the things I made I liked better than what I’d been buying from the store… and I could actually pronounce the entire ingredient list.
